2005-06-17 - 00:16 Pro-gender equality. In a perfect world a short skirt would be understood as permission to look, something that is not done with the hands. You can appreciate without being disgusting or rude. The thing is, when I was little there seemed to be a code of conduct that stated when something was appropriate and most people held to it. For example, in the middle of a discussion about bioethics one should not comment on my legginess. This is inappropriate. Doing so in the middle of a discussion tells me you weren’t paying attention to what I said. Also, you may as well just tell me flat out that you have no respect for my intellect as such a comment would effectively reduce me to nothing more than a pair of killer legs. Not respecting my intellect is insulting and reducing me to one body part is objectifying. Why did I even bother to get out of bed? I bother to get out of bed because of I love life and art and sunshine and kittens and cookies. Also, I get out of bed because of things like Shumley Boteach's new book. God bless that man. My review of the book is probably just the beginning, I have a feeling I'll be discussing this for awhile. There are other interesting things to be read, like that fantastic, discussion generating piece on pro-sex feminism. Or, this fantastic social experiment. I don't know about you, but when I wake up in the morning I think "human being" is my default setting. No one should feel like they have to fight for their humanity.
